Studying or Conducting Research in Lithuania
You can come to Lithuania for study or research purposes.
- Short-term stay (up to 1 year): Students, teachers, or researchers can obtain a national visa (D).
- Long-term stay: Apply for a Temporary Residence Permit (TRP). TRPs are usually issued for 2 years and can be renewed.

To obtain a national visa (D), you must apply at the Embassy of Lithuania.
To obtain a TRP, submit your application on MIGRIS and submit your documents at a VFS Global visa application center.
Obtaining a TRP Before Arrival
Applications for a TRP can be submitted in 30 countries via VFS Global:
Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Philippines, Ghana, India, Israel, Japan, United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, Malaysia, Moldova, Mongolia, New Zealand, South Africa, Georgia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Türkiye, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Zimbabwe.
Note: A mediation number from the University is required to book an appointment at the VFS Global Center.
VFS Global offices are authorized to:
- Provide information on TRP procedures
- Accept applications and required documents
- Collect personal and biometric data for transfer to the Lithuanian Migration Department
The decision to grant a TRP is made only by the Migration Department of Lithuania.
Once the Migration Department decides to issue a TRP, the card may be sent abroad, allowing you to arrive in Lithuania holding a valid TRP without needing an additional visa.
If you have a visa allowing entry to Lithuania, or can arrive visa-free, you may collect your TRP card at the Migration Office after arrival.
